Mizna: The Black SWANA Issue features contributions by Fahad Al-Amoudi, Salma Ali, Shams Alkamil, Ladin Awad, Lameese Badr, Romaissaa Benzizoune, Dina El Dessouky, Atheel Elmalik, k. eltinaé, Samah Fadil, Shawn Frazier, Myronn Hardy, Fatma Hassan, Asmaa Jama, Marlin M. The paintings of Kamala Ibrahim Ishag, a key figure in many Sudanese modernist art movements, perhaps most famously the Crystalist movement, will grace the pages of The Black SWANA Issue. Additionally, poet Charif Shanahan sits down with guest-editor Safia Elhillo for an interview.

The summer 2022 issue of Mizna celebrates the life and legacy of Etel Adnan.

This issue features Adnan’s colorful paintings and tapestries. Omar Berrada, one of Adnan’s frequent collaborators, contributes a translated essay, “I followed lines I never saw,” originally written for the catalog of the exhibition Ecrire, c’est dessiner, which opened at Centre Pompidou-Metz in October 2021 and was inspired by Adnan’s idea that “writing is drawing.” Curator Marie-Nour Héchaime will interview Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige about the making of the film ISMYRNA and their creative relationship with Adnan. Additionally, writers and artists who have been impacted by Adnan’s life and work contribute works for an accompanying digital feature on Mizna’s website.
